Every month I publish an income report…why? Good question 🙂
1. Accountability
With all the shiny objects out there it’s easy to spend WAY more than you’re earning. Luckily I realized this early on and I’ve kept detailed records of my expenses ever since. That being said, I know that there are certain expenses that are NECESSARY when running a business. As much as I don’t want to pay for them, I need to pay for my email autoresponder, website hosting, and video hosting every month. It’s just a part of doing business. There are other things that I buy as well, but I try my best to keep my expenses SIGNIFICANTLY LESS than my revenue. If I can do that then I’m ahead of the game.
2. Integrity
On my show I ask my guests a lot of personal questions. One that frequently comes up is “How much do you make?”. I feel like I need to reveal my own income if I’m going to be asking others the same question. It only seems right.
3. Perspective
There are a lot of online marketers out there who fake-it-till-they-make-it. In other words, they fudge their numbers and exaggerate their earnings in order to establish false authority in their niche. My goal is that by watching my income grow slowly over time you’ll realize that there is no get-rich-quick button.

My income decreased about $91k from 2016…which is what I expected since we did less launches this year.
I’m still very happy with these results since I made the same salary as a surgeon, CEO of a large company, a Wall Street Banker…and the President of the United States. Not too shabby 😉
What happened in 2017?
This year FLEW by for me. I’m not sure if it’s because we bought a new apartment and I’ve been wishing the months away so I could pay it off completely (which I did) or if I’m just getting older and time is passing faster…but either way…this year went by in a blink.
I had a bunch of goals that I set out at the beginning of last year, and of course I haven’t looked at them since 🙁 Let’s see if I hit any of them this year.
So let’s look at a timeline for 2017:
January: I started 2017 by ringing in the New Year with my family in Maine, followed by a quick overnight trip to New York before flying back to Istanbul. Once we got back we were met with a HUGE snow storm (and some jet lag) that prevented me from getting back into my work until the second week. I was still able to make $24,672 with a late start 🙂
February: After a slow start, Brett and I were back at it in February. We launched a software called Review Wizard and did $83,000 in total sales. We were a bit disappointed that we did hit six figures on this one, but it was still a decent launch. I ended up making $39,292.
March: This month brought us our WORST product launch ever, with a total of $38,000 in sales. We partnered with a newer marketer to help him bring it to market, and it just didn’t go as planned. However we learned some powerful lessons from it that we haven’t repeated since. My wife and I also bought our new apartment. I made a total of $39,130.
April: Brett and I entered another partnership…but this time the result was much better. We launched a software called Board Commander and did $150,000 in sales. And my wife and I finally got to take another vacation where we went on a road trip from Germany to Austria and back with some friends. I made a total of $48,344.
May: This month was a bit hectic. I was able to juggle some promos, a backend webinar, and a few other webinars while moving into our new apartment in the middle of the month. All this moving around made it essential that I had things planned out ahead of time, and I did a fairly good job at it with a total income of $33,076.
June: We launched Autonars, and did about $111,000 in total sales. From that launch, and the backend webinar, I made about $33k in profit, which was definitely a nice addition to a relatively slow year. This was to be our last “BIG” launch before the Summer, and I ended up with a total income of $47,117.
July: Summer was here. My wife and I started the month by spending the first week in Bozcaada (Tenedos), a beautiful tiny island off the coast of Turkey. When we came back I did affiliate promos for the next couple of weeks, and then I took the last week off to take a trip to Olimpos with a friend. After that we did a boat cruise in Bodrum with my wife and a larger group of friends. It was nice to disconnect from the business and enjoy some of the money that I’d worked so hard making during the first part of the year. Even with this time off I ended up with a total income of $25,904.
August: I took another two weeks off this month. Of course I did a few little promos while I was off at the beach, but my priority wasn’t work…it was spending time with my family. We took a trip to Bodrum again, and stayed at my in-law’s timeshare, soaking in the sun during the day and eating delicious seafood at night. Of course, the Summer vacationing started to take a bit of a toll on my income…but I was 100% fine with it 🙂 I ended up making $19,226.
September: Summer was over, and it was time to get back to work (for the most part). We launched our Social Traffic System at the beginning of the month and did $50,000 in sales. It wasn’t our best launch ever, but I still made about $15,000 in profits including the backend webinar. Towards the end of the month I went to a marketing event in Orlando, Florida. I spent the weekend there, and then met up with my wife, sister-in-law, and mom in New York City. We spent a week in New York, and I probably ate about 100 oysters throughout the week…not great for my cholesterol 🙂 I ended up with a total profit of $30,028.
October: This month I published my 1,000th episode of The Mike From Maine Show. I also took a mini-road trip with some friends to Olimpos. However in general it was a typical month, but a little slow income-wise, ending with $21,168 in profits.
November: This was actually a pretty good month, considering it was close to the end of the year. We released a software called Instant Video Pages, which did about $55,000 in total sales. On top of that, we opened up our coaching program where we teach how to start your own profitable software business. I ended up making $42,038.
December: This month started off slowly as I was pretty exhausted from doing phone calls with prospective coaching clients. My wife and I took a trip to Hamburg at the beginning of the month, and then I closed down “shop” around the 20th for the Christmas holiday and New Year’s. Even with the traditionally slow holiday season, I was able to profit $24,722.
What WERE my goals for 2017?
Business goals
1. Be easily making $50,000 per month by December, 2017 DIDN’T ACHIEVE
Unfortunately I missed this goal by a lot. I made an average of $32,893 per month in 2017.
2. Build my email list to 30,000 active subscribers DIDN’T ACHIEVE
I ended the year with less subscribers than I started with. However, I’ve been cleaning my list a lot more recently to remove people who never open emails.
3. Invest in another property ACHIEVED
We bought a new apartment in March and kept the old one as a rental. In 2017 I became a landlord for the first time 🙂
4. Launch at least 7 software and training products DIDN’T ACHIEVE
We did 6 launches this year, one more than in 2016, but technically I didn’t hit my goal of 7 launches.
5. Read or listen to 2 business books per month DIDN’T ACHIEVE
This one was a big failure. I don’t think I even listed to one business book.
Personal Goals
6. Get my weight down to 175 lbs (currently 184.5 lbs) and my body fat to 20% (currently 22.8%) DIDN’T ACHIEVE
I ended the year at exactly the same weight (184.5 lbs), but my body fat is down to 21.6, so I lost a bit of fat.
7. Read or listen to 2 fiction books per month DIDN’T ACHIEVE
I read and listened to a few books this year, but no where near 2 ebooks per month.
8. Start a cooking show as a hobby on Youtube and create at least 100 videos DIDN’T ACHIEVE
My wife and I were going to start a show, but it ended up that I was more excited about it than she was 🙂 Instead she is pursing a hobby in jewelry making and ceramics.
So that makes it ONE achievement and SEVEN “failures”. To be honest, I didn’t set myself up for success. I made these goals and then didn’t look at them again until a year later. In order to stick with goals like these you need to have them right in front of you. I definitely didn’t do that.
So what ARE my goals for 2018?
Business goals
1. Be easily making $30,000 per month by December, 2018
My goal this year is to average $30,000 per month, thus totaling $360,000. This is actually LESS than I made in 2017, but I’d prefer working a bit less and still making a healthy income.
2. Build my email list to 20,000 active subscribers
I’m currently in the process of cleaning my email list. If I can end up at 20,000 active subscribers by December I’ll be in great shape.
3. Help at least 20 students launch their first software
We recently started a coaching program at the end of 2017. I’d love to have at least 20 of them put out their first softwares.
4. Launch at least 5 products
I’m not going to try and launch a ton of products this year. I’d rather do less launches but make them bigger.
5. Read or listen to 2 business books per month
I have this goal every year, and I’m yet to achieve it. This year I will.
Personal Goals
6. Get my weight down to 175 lbs (currently 184.5 lbs) and my body fat to 20% (currently 21.6%)
My weight usually fluctuates between 183 and 189. I’d like to fluctuate between 173 and 179 instead.
7. Read or listen to 2 fiction books per month
I have this goal every year, and I’m yet to achieve it. This year I will.
8. Relax
I’ve built a profitable business and now live in a nice apartment. I’d like to enjoy it more even if that means making less money.
2017 was a bit of a stressful year for me with spending a large chunk of my assets on a new apartment. I’m hoping to simply continue doing what’s working in my business in 2018 and start helping more people who are just getting started.
Thank you so much for reading this, following my journey, watching my interviews and reviews, and of course, purchasing products through my affiliate link. I couldn’t do this without you!
Have a great 2018!
Congrats on another successful year. 30k a month while relaxing a bit more is always nice 🙂
Yeah it really is 🙂
Always love your transparency Mike Gives newbies a real insight about what is possible even taking away your own coaching and own product launches but clear you need to run it as a business and it doesn’t happen over night Great model ! Congrats
Thanks, Grant.
Yes, it definitely didn’t happen overnight. I’ve been doing this since 2012!
Mike.. Really great to read another good year for you. Good move with the rental property. Long may you continue building the empire
Shaun
Thanks, Shaun. I’m not gonna lie…I’m a bit exhausted after building up this business, but it’s been worth it.
